The Washington Little Capitals are proud to announce the addition of current Sioux City Musketeers (USHL) Assistant Coach Jared Kersner as 2026–2027 15O Head Coach.
Kersner brings more than 15 years of high-level coaching and player development experience to the Washington Little Capitals. A USA Hockey Level V–certified coach, he has built a proven track record of developing elite players and competitive programs across Tier I, Tier II junior, and AAA hockey.
Most recently, Kersner served as an Assistant Coach with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL, the top Tier I junior league in the United States, working closely with some of the nation’s most talented prospects. His coaching resume also includes Head Coach and General Manager roles with the Johnstown Tomahawks (NAHL), Rockets Hockey Club (NCDC), and Skipjacks Hockey Club, along with multiple deep runs to USA Hockey Nationals at the AAA level. Throughout his career, he has helped advance numerous players to NCAA Division I programs, the USHL, and ultimately the NHL.
A DMV native, Kersner grew up playing youth hockey with the Washington Little Capitals, giving him a deep personal connection to the organization and the community. That experience helped shape his passion for the game and his commitment to developing young players both on and off the ice. He now returns to the program as a coach and mentor for the next generation of Little Capitals players.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join the Washington Little Capitals family,” said Kersner. “Working under Mike Donnellan and alongside such a committed, established staff is a tremendous opportunity. I am eager to contribute to a program that has meant so much to me personally and to hockey in this region.
Kersner is widely respected for running high-tempo, detail-driven practices, implementing elite video review, and excelling as a bench coach who can manage games at the highest levels. His modern approach emphasizes accountability, pace, and execution while continuing to prioritize character, discipline, and team culture.
Executive Director Mike Donnellan emphasized the importance of adding a coach with Kersner’s pedigree and proven success.
“Hiring a coach with Jared’s background is important for us as we continue to raise the standard of our program,” said Donnellan. “He’s had sustained success at every level—AAA, NCDC, NAHL, and now the USHL—and has consistently developed players who move on to NCAA Division I and professional hockey. Jared runs elite practices, does exceptional video work, and is an outstanding bench coach. His experience, professionalism, and hockey IQ immediately elevate our staff and our players’ daily environment.”
A former collegiate player at Becker College, Kersner remains committed to continuous professional growth, regularly attending USA Hockey symposiums and NHL Coaches Association clinics to stay at the forefront of coaching innovation. His brother Jason is currently the Head Coach of the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL.
